Battery model field guide

Before you start

Collect the released datasheet, nameplate, test reports, vehicle documents, composition and safety data, conformity declaration and durable document addresses. Ask the manufacturer or compliance team for missing evidence.

Saving and passport readiness are different. The form requires Part number, Revision and Commercial name; Revision defaults to A. Other values can remain unknown in a draft, but completed values must still be valid. Saving does not activate or certify a passport.

Leave unknown values empty. Zero is a declared value, not a placeholder. Examples below show syntax only, not a compliant technical definition or emergency advice. Do not copy them as evidence.

Enter numbers without unit symbols or thousands separators. Decimal dot or comma is accepted. Whole-number fields are rounded when saved: enter the intended integer yourself.

How to read the requirements

These badges describe the current Stele workflow. Legal applicability also depends on category, dates and relevant acts; the badge is not a legal assessment.

Required to save: Model identity. This does not mean the passport is complete.
Required for DPP: Collect before passport readiness in the supported profile. Individual-battery and dynamic data are added elsewhere.
Required if applicable: Required when the stated condition is met; check the field explanation and section notes.
Optional in this form: Useful context or an alternative external resource. Optional URL fields do not make the underlying safety or end-of-life information optional.
Later / check applicability: The wizard groups these as later-stage data. Check the actual category-specific dates and methodology, especially for the carbon footprint of EV batteries.

Identity

The part-number/revision pair identifies this technical definition. A revision is not a new passport identity.

Legal classification

The current software derives LMT/EV from these six traits; missing traits produce a non-emittable draft. Excluded software results are not proof that the Regulation does not apply. Check the legal vehicle category with the manufacturer.

EU vehicle categoryRequired for DPP

Choose the documented L/M/N/O category, or Outside L/M/N/O for vehicles such as qualifying 250 W / 25 km/h pedal-assist cycles excluded under Regulation 168/2013 Article 2(2)(h). Outside is not unknown: leave unknown traits blank. Battery classification is derived separately; outside batteries above 25 kg require assessment under another category, not automatic EV classification.

Enter the declared specifications of the complete battery pack model. Capacity in Ah, energy in Wh and nominal voltage in V describe different quantities; use the manufacturer’s value for each. Warranty is conditional on an offered warranty. Manufacturer ID, email and website are saved only with a manufacturer name. Due diligence and recycled content need their own applicability checks.

Materials and safety

Composition is not automatically public. Hazardous substance data is required when those substances are present; unknown does not mean absent. Usable extinguishing agents are required separately for the public DPP even with an external safety resource. Without that resource, also supply the approved handling instructions used by Stele to generate it.

Add each material and select its component from the controlled menu. The stable values are cathode, anode, electrolyte, wiring, housing and other. Declare critical raw materials explicitly; mass and location detail are optional. Existing translated names are converted when unambiguous; unresolved values require review, never silent omission.

Before you save and issue passports

Review units, document types and sources. The guided form can be bypassed with Expert mode; it does not autosave. Saving a draft does not complete serial numbers, manufacturing dates, activation, current state-of-health (SoH) data or lifecycle events. Those belong to individual batteries. Once passports use a model, declared fields are locked: use New revision; only commercial name and internal notes remain editable.

Applicability and official sources

This is a guide to the current application, not certification or a substitute for the Regulation. The supported model workflow classifies LMT/EV; that software scope does not exclude industrial batteries from legal passport duties. The Commission’s guidance adds no legal requirements. No definitive requirements from EN 18239 or EN 18246 are asserted here; their full texts have not been reviewed.

Article 48 due diligence starts on 18 August 2027 for operators in scope, following Regulation (EU) 2025/1561. Carbon footprint (Article 7) and recycled content (Article 8) follow their own category-specific dates and relevant acts; do not treat “later” as a blanket exemption.
