What you are looking at

A facsimile of the record a QR code opens

From 18 February 2027 every battery for a light means of transport placed on the EU market carries a passport, and a QR code on the pack that opens it. This is one, rendered by the same software that serves the real ones, with the numbers replaced by illustrative values.

The code above is the payload a printed label actually carries. Scan it and you land on the same record at its own address, which is what a customer, a dealer or a recycler would do standing in front of the pack.

The part worth trying

Switch the access level at the top of the document

The same record shows different things to different readers, and that is written into the law rather than chosen by us: Article 77(2) gives the general public one part of Annex XIII, notified bodies and market surveillance authorities another, and repairers, remanufacturers and recyclers a third. Move the selector and sections appear and disappear.

On a real passport that switch does not exist, because the server sends only the fields the reader is entitled to and nothing else reaches the browser. It is here because on illustrative data it can show you the whole shape at once.

Worth trying in particular: switch to “Authorities” and watch the state of health stay closed. That is not a gap in the demonstration. Article 77(2)(b) gives notified bodies and market surveillance authorities points 2 and 3 of Annex XIII, and not point 4, so the data about the individual battery is reserved to persons with a legitimate interest. The three levels here intersect rather than nest, and the selector follows the same matrix the server applies to real data. The full list of data points, and who reads each one.

Honesty about the facsimile

What is real here, and what is not

  • The software, which is the one serving production passports.
  • The serial, which resolves and carries an event record.
  • The QR payload, byte for byte what a printed label carries.
  • The access filter, applied on the server on real data.
Not real
  • The battery. No such pack was ever built.
  • The manufacturer and the model, which are placeholders.
  • The measurements, the cycles and the state of health.
  • The economic operator and its identifier, left out on purpose: a facsimile must not attribute a real registration to anyone.
The other two facsimiles

A passport that always says fine proves nothing

The row of facsimiles at the top of the document switches between three packs with different physical evidence behind them: one with no tag at all, where the page states that authenticity cannot be verified; one whose tag reads and whose seal is intact; and one whose seal was opened after pairing, which the page reports as plainly as the other two.

The third one is the reason the other two are worth anything. A document that renders the same reassurance whatever the hardware says is decoration, and a verdict that can never come out badly is not a verdict.

These three are live records on the production system, not mockups, and they answer the same way to anyone who opens them. Nothing is asked in return.
